Power Oats

1 serving · eat 2 hours before a workout, sport, or long active day

The breakfast for days with something physical ahead. Slow-burning oats, enough protein to hold blood sugar steady through the morning, the cherry-and-walnut profile that does double duty as flavor and anti-inflammatory support. Soaks overnight, so it's a two-minute assembly in the morning.

Ingredients
  • ½ cup sprouted rolled oats
  • 1 cup plain unsweetened kefir (or unsweetened coconut milk for a lighter version)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed (grind fresh in a high-speed blender)
  • 1 tbsp natural peanut butter
  • 1 tsp date syrup (or raw honey)
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch sea salt
  • Topping: 2 tbsp chopped walnuts, 4–5 dried tart cherries, fresh blueberries when available
Directions

The night before, combine oats and kefir in a bowl or jar and refrigerate. In the morning, stir in flax, peanut butter, date syrup, cinnamon, and salt. Top with walnuts, cherries, and berries. Eat cold, or warm gently for 30 seconds (medium power)—don't boil, it turns gluey.

Why this works

Overnight soaking in kefir does three jobs at once: it softens the oats so they're spoon-tender without cooking, lets the kefir's probiotics work on the oats, and starts a mild fermentation that breaks down residual phytic acid for better mineral absorption. The oat-and-peanut-butter base provides slow-release fuel across a 2+ hour window; the cherries and walnuts add anti-inflammatory anthocyanins and omega-3s. Eaten about two hours before activity, it delivers the same slow-burn fuel pattern as a pre-workout bar, in meal form.
